DesignBuild Services for New Renewable Energy Generation Facility

SAIC is providing integrated engineering-procurement-construction (EPC)/DesignBuild project delivery services for a new 5.1 megawatt binary geothermal plant in Churchill County, Nev., for Terra Gen Sierra Holdings, LLC.

Overview

The new Terra Gen 5.1 megawatt binary geothermal plant will be located adjacent to the existing geothermal power generation facility built in the mid 1980s. SAIC was chosen to provide multidiscipline engineering-procurement-construction (EPC), DesignBuildSM project delivery, and commissioning services.

The fuel source for the new facility is spent brine discharged from the existing facility. The spent brine has unused heating value, providing an opportunity for this heat to be converted to energy without the need for increased fuel (brine) cost. The heat supplied by the brine is sufficient to heat the refrigerant to the subcritical state for maximum efficiency. After much of the available heat energy has been transferred to the refrigerant, the brine is re-injected into the geothermal reservoir without otherwise changing its characteristics. This provides the customer a cost-effective opportunity to add capacity to the existing facility operations.

The power island for the new facility is a Turbine Air Systems (TAS) modular plant design that includes power generation skids (including generator) and an air-cooled condenser array. SAIC is providing services for the following:

  • Installing the skid-mounted equipment and air-cooled condenser
  • Designing, furnishing, and installing interconnecting piping and balance of plant electrical work
  • Designing, furnishing, and installing site work features and foundations for the entire facility
  • Providing construction management

A major SAIC contribution to the project was enabling the customer to proceed with project financing in a timely manner. During debt syndication for the project the customer was notified that lenders would require a financially strong, experienced third-party EPC contractor be engaged to execute the work. At the request of the customer, SAIC negotiated a lender-acceptable EPC contract in less than one week. The quick response and industry knowledge demonstrated by SAIC allowed the project financial closing to proceed on schedule.

DesignBuild is a service mark of Science Applications International Corporation in the U.S. and/or other countries.
