SAIC to Update Security at Five Maryland Toll Bridges

(McLEAN, Va.) Jan. 19, 2012 – Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] was awarded a $9 million contract by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) for security upgrades for the Bay, Key, Nice, Tydings, and Hatem bridges as well as the security operations center in Maryland These five state-owned toll bridges will receive new sensors to detect stopped vehicles on the roadways, stopped vessels around bridge piers, and people in critical areas of the bridge structure.

Security work to the Central Security Operations Center and bridges is expected to begin in late winter and will be installed over an 18-month period, followed by three and a half years of warranty and maintenance. SAIC will design, construct, furnish, install, integrate, test, commission, maintain, and warrant the electronic surveillance, detection, and related equipment for the bridges’ security. Work will primarily be performed out of SAIC’s Abingdon, Md. location.

The project is part of the state’s aggressive homeland security plan. Since the 2001 terrorist attacks, Maryland officials have received several vulnerability assessments of infrastructure, including bridges and tunnels. SAIC’s system will address surveillance, analytics, detection, verification, and response support. The core component is a web-based command and control system, which will help foster an environment of interagency collaboration in the state.

“The new software package SAIC is providing will allow a more seamless transfer of information among the Maryland partners,” said SAIC Project Manager Neil Chung. “It will permit each one to set electronic perimeters around key sites that will trigger alarms if crossed.”
